How To Stay Safe With Your Vehicle Until Roadside Assistance Arrives

Has your vehicle broken down on the side of the road and now you are waiting on roadside assistance to arrive? If so, you'll need to follow these tips in order to stay safe until you can get the help that you need.

Put On Your Hazard Lights

The first thing you should do when you realize that your vehicle is having problems is to put on your hazard lights. This is going to let all the drivers around you know that you have a problem with your vehicle, making it easier to merge through traffic to get to the side of the road. If you have a reflective triangle or flares that can be put out behind your vehicle, use those as well. This is the exact situation that you have them for since they are an extra step that is going to keep you and your vehicle safe.

Pull Off Fully On The Shoulder

Your goal should be to get the vehicle fully onto the shoulder of the road so that other vehicles can avoid you. Keep your hazard lights on, especially at night, so that other vehicles know that there is a vehicle parked on the side of the road. If you leave your lights off, your vehicle may be hit by accident because another driver did not see you.

Make Note Of Your Location

If you are on the highway, you'll likely need to know some sort of indicator as to where you are located. Look for nearby mile markers and exits that can be given to a roadside assistance service to get an idea of where you are. Tell them which side of the road you pulled off on as well since that can help them approach your vehicle.

Stay In Your Vehicle With The Seatbelt On

The safest place that you can be when stranded on the side of the road is in your own vehicle with the seatbelt on. If you are outside your vehicle, getting hit by another driver at a high speed will certainly be fatal. If you are in your vehicle, not having a seatbelt on if your vehicle is hit can lead to major injuries that are also potentially fatal. That is why it is so important to buckle up as if you were still driving on the road.
